In pursuance of its objective of raising awareness on the applications of mathematical sciences and providing networking opportunities to researchers, students and alumni of AIMS Cameroon and the University of Kassel, Germany co-organized a workshop on the Introduction to Computer Algebra and Applications” at Hotel Prince de Galles in Douala, Cameroon from the 6th -13th of October 2017. The workshop was supported by the Volkswagen Foundation within the framework of its Funding Initiative “Symposia and Summer Schools” and was aimed globally at promoting capacity building in terms of research and training in computer algebra and applications, discussions and development of new ideas, development and enhancement of networking including South-South cooperation.

The AIMS-Volkswagen Stiftung Workshop brought together 118 participants from 26 African and European countries including 14 plenary speakers and trainers who are experts in their various domains. In total, about 50 plenary talks, tutorials, training sessions and contributed talks were delivered. An evaluation of the workshop portrays above 95% overall satisfaction from the participants who are expecting an even greater success for the second workshop.

This workshop was the first part of a proposal for two workshops submitted by The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Cameroon and the University of Kassel (Germany) to the Volkswagen Foundation. The Volkswagen Foundation (VolkswagenStiftung) is dedicated to the support of the humanities and social sciences as well as science and technology in higher education and research. It funds research projects in path-breaking areas.

The Opening Ceremony presided over by the German Ambassador

Although the preliminary workshop and the workshop started with welcome notes from the co-organizers Professor Dr. Koepf of the university of kalsseland Prof. Dr. Foupouagnigni, AIMS Cameroon Centre President, the official Opening Ceremony took place on Wednesday October 11, from 12:30 to 13:30 and was presided over by the German Ambassador in Cameroon Dr. Hans-Dieter Stell. A day before, the German Embassy had invited the plenary speakers to an official welcome reception on the occasion of the German Day of Unity 2017, on October 10, at the Foyer du Marin in Douala. Also, a guided tour of the city of Douala was offered to all the international participants with stopovers at the Maritime Museum and the handicraft market. This was followed by the Conference Dinner at Restaurant Bellavie in Bonanjo.
